I want to know Where to sell plants to make money?

If you love plants, you might have thought about selling houseplants.

Houseplants are a great and affordable way to add greenery to your space and bring outdoors. I have over 200 (yes, over 200!) houseplants in my home.

There are a few things you need to know to sell houseplants well so that you can earn extra income. My guide will explain to you everything you need to know to sell houseplants!

Where to sell houseplants

This is a list of the best places to sell houseplants.

1. Etsy

Etsy is a popular place to sell all kinds of houseplants. On this site you can find common and rare houseplants, along with seed and plant-related supplies. A quick search for Housplants on Etsy will help you find a list of dozens of plants ranging from $5 to hundreds.

Importantly, the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) has regulations that could prohibit the shipment of certain plants across state or national borders.

Additionally, when shipping live plants, they must be carefully packaged to prevent damage caused by transportation and weather. Etsy’s listings require high quality photos, detailed explanations, and even useful tips on plant care.

Etsy has many other plant sellers, so you can stay competitive by finding unique angles such as rare plants, stylish planters, and environmentally friendly packaging.

I bought plants on Etsy, so too did my sister (she recently bought three coconut buds as a gift for her family!).

2. Facebook

I bought a huge number of plants on Facebook, especially the plant group on Facebook. This is a great place to sell houseplants along with the Facebook Marketplace.

The Facebook Marketplace allows for the delivery of qualified items. They can also be sold locally and offer porch pickups and meetups in public/safe locations.

When selling houseplants on Facebook groups or Facebook Marketplaces, use high-quality photos taken in bright areas from multiple angles. It also helps you know what plant measurements are, as it can distort the photo.

3. Amazon

Yes, you can sell houseplants on Amazon!

While selling on Amazon has the advantage of reaching a large customer base, there are a few things you need to know. You must have a seller account and check plant regulations.

Some plants may be restricted due to agricultural laws. Living plants need safe packaging, so they are safely shipped to your new home.

Amazon seems far more competitive than other platforms. I’ve never heard of anyone going to Amazon to buy a house plant. But it’s an option, so people have to buy and sell there.

4. I’ll ship my plants

Ship My Plants is an online service designed to sell plants. This platform helps to make the process convenient and easy to ship by providing tools and packaging. When I ship my plants, I’ll be provided with ready-made, sturdy boxes specially designed for my facility. You will also get tracking and insurance options for plant shipping.

My plants understand the specific needs of the plants, so this will make the delivery process smoother as a seller and your customer. To sell houseplants using my plants, there is a charge based on the size, weight and distance of the cargo. If you use packaging from a ship from my factory, it comes with an additional cost and if you decide to get it, I’m adding it to additional insurance.

5. Plantries

Plantly is an online marketplace where you can buy and sell houseplants. With Plantly, you can ship plants and get help in packaging, shipping and tracking. Plantly uses eco-friendly packaging designed to protect plants during transportation and weather.

Plantly also offers insurance and tracking options to enhance your sense of security. There is a charge for using Plantly’s services. This depends on the weight, size and destination of the package. However, Plantly is usually competitive, so it’s worth it.

6. eBay

eBay is the perfect place to sell rare and unique houseplants that people can’t find locally. eBay has a huge audience around the world and also offers the option to sell items on a fixed price or auction style listing. Please note that eBay typically charges fees that are up to 12% of the selling price.

There are quite a few plant sellers on eBay. So it’s important to stand out by selling rare plants, using high quality photos and competitive pricing (find some plants similar to eBay’s list).

7. Farmers Market

Farmers Markets is a profitable and rewarding way to contact houseplant buyers. Farmers’ markets tend to attract crowds living in natural lives, and accompanying this comes the appearance of houseplants. Compared to brick and mortar store operations, farmers markets can reduce startup costs much lower.

Usually you just pay the booth fee and buy the tent and table (and decoration), the packaging and the plants themselves. Depending on the market and your location, there may be competition with other plant sellers. So it’s important to find a way to stand out yourself.

8. Plant exchange

I’ve been to some plant swaps and it’s a great way to buy houseplants and trade houseplants. However, some plant swaps have rules and regulations regarding the sale of houseplants, so you need to make sure you are clear in advance.

Plant exchanges are a great way to connect with fellow plant lovers and promote your business. Networking with others who share your passion is a fun and low-cost way.

9. Sell plants on your own site

Another way to sell houseplants is to sell them through their own website. Selling plants on your own website has the advantage of giving you complete control over everything, including design, pricing, customer experience.

However, there is more work to launch and run the site and sell your own plants. This option is for people for long periods of time, as it can take time for your site to gain traction and trust from houseplant lovers.

A great way to bring people to your site is to provide as much value as possible with useful plant information and tips.

10. Local plant store

Local plant stores are the best way to sell mobile phones, especially if you sell mobile phones. However, keep in mind that you are probably likely to give them a cut as you use space to sell your houseplants.

I’ve seen independent plant sellers on sale for special events at local plant stores. This allows more people to reach the store as they can see unique plants that are not normally found at plant stores.

As long as you respect the space in your local factory and pay a fair cut, both businesses can lead to mutually beneficial work relationships that are available.

FAQ

Below are answers to common questions about selling houseplants.

Is it beneficial to sell plants?

(Selling houseplants is profitable, especially when you concentrate on the right houseplants and have a good marketing and sales strategy. Rare or unique plants in high demand are usually the way to go, especially since these are not usually found in local plant stores. Plant cultivation and propagation can also be low initial investment, but perseverance is important.

Is it legal to sell plants from home?

It is legal to sell plants from your home, but there are a few things to consider, including local zoning laws, permits, sales tax and business licenses.

Do I need a business license to sell plants?

Whether or not you need a business license will depend on where you live, how much you sell, and how you run your plant business. The following general guidelines are listed below:

If you sell locally on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, you may not need a business license depending on where you live. If you sell frequently and earn a significant income, you may need a business license.

Selling online (having your own site, selling on Etsy, etc.) is a completely different ball game. This may require you to register your business with a local government as it may be legally operated and tax-related needs (such as obtaining a nursery license).

What is the most profitable plant to sell?

The most profitable factories to sell are constantly changing, and demand in the market fluctuates very frequently. For example, a few years ago, the Philodendron’s “Ring of Fire” and the Monsteratia constellations were very expensive. That is until places like Home Depot and local grocery stores start selling them in bulk supplies.

Certain types of begonias and phyllodendrons are looking for a significant penny, and the more established, larger, unusual plants, the higher the price tag. It is not common to find rare plants in large sizes.

What is the best place to sell plants online?

The best places to sell plants online will depend on the type of plants you are selling and how you manage shipping costs.

For example, Etsy is the perfect platform for selling rare or special plants, plant-related accessories and pots. Etsy has a strong community of plant lovers, so people tend to go there and find rare plant varieties.

However, the Facebook market and local Facebook groups are the best options if you don’t want to deal with delivery. Instead, we will do pouch picks and local picks.

Do nursery buy plants?

Some nursery purchase plants, which depends on whether the plant is unique and healthy or in demand. For example, common plants are usually grown by nursery beds or wholesale from suppliers. However, if there are some rare or unique things that are difficult to find, the nursery may be more interested in buying from you.

What kind of plants can you sell?

People can purchase all kinds of plants, including house plants, succulents, outdoor plants, cacti, herbs, bulbs, perennials, vegetable plants (such as peppers and tomatoes), fruit trees (such as mangoes and apples), and everything in between. In this connection, you can also sell plant subscription boxes, decorative plant pots, fertilizers, plant kits and more.

What is the best way to ship plants for sale?

The best way to keep your plants securely packaged and safe during transportation is to ensure they are safe. As you can probably guess, this can be difficult for some plants. You’ll want to start by gently wrapping the plants and roots. You may need to test some processes to see what works best. You also need a sturdy box with little room for plants to move around, and add padding like crumpled paper or bubble wrap to stabilize it. Make sure the box is clearly labelled as “living plants” and try shipping early in the week to avoid weekend delays. Also, always check weather conditions and avoid shipping during extreme heat or cold (whatever the weather the plants are unfamiliar with!).
