Most of us have heard of different ways to save cash that could actually work. And if you make it fun, something like savings can become easier. That’s why many people love finding strange ways to save money.

Crazy things you need to do to save money

My mother was known for being frugal and for finding strange ways to save money. After all, having three children will teach you how to spend your money wisely.

There were a few things I did to save money on my vacation budget, such as shopping for second-hand clothes, shopping at discount grocery stores, reusing leftovers, etc.

If she wasn’t that simple, we wouldn’t have had that many enjoyable experiences. Saving money anywhere can help you build a savings account for the more important things.

40 Strange Ways to Save Money

Whether you’re a working mom or a career-oriented woman, saving money is a must. Check out these strange ways to save money.

1. Sell empty toilet paper rolls

You may scratch your head with this, but people actually buy empty toilet paper rolls. They are used for crafts and other projects and can be sold on eBay.

So instead of throwing these empty rolls into the trash can, put them in the box and move your money right now.

2. I’ll sell eggs

Here we talk about actual female reproductive eggs, not chicken eggs. The average egg donor compensation requires you to qualify to become an egg donor to be an egg donor, but according to Egg Donor America, the average egg donor compensation is between $5,000 and $10,000.

It is one of the most extreme, modest living ideas to save money, but it is a high paying idea. If you’re frozen eggs, this could be an option too.

3. Receive plasma payments

Selling plasma is a great, crazy thing to do to make money if you’re not afraid of needles. The average payment for plasma donations is around $50, Business Insider claims. They also explain that you can donate about once a month.

4. Make your own soap

If you enjoy making money, making your own soap and making your own laundry detergent is a fun way to save money. Be even more frugal, buy lots of ingredients and create large batches to save time.

5. Please rent your car

Move through Air B&B. Now people are borrowing cars for money. Some people make hundreds of dollars a month by renting cars from Turo. These ideas are perfect for people who work from home.

6. I live on the bus

Living on a bus is one of the odd ways to save money. Squall is an old-fashioned bus that has been transformed into a small house or recreational vehicle. You can own your home and travel the country while saving money.

7. Cash can

Recycling is great for the environment, but you can also get some cash back for your good deeds. We also set up recycle bins at our friends and family homes, and sell aluminum cans in cash.

8. Skip Christmas

You’ve heard of Christmas on a budget, but skipping it completely saves you a ton of money. A weekend getaway can even be cheaper than spending tons on gifts.

That doesn’t mean you’re a Scrooge. Prevents credit card debt from a guilty purchase.

9. Remove the appliance

Did you know that some appliances attract energy even when they are not in use? They are known as “energy vampires” and cost money.

Simply unplugging it will save you $100-$200 a year. Recently, there are also energy efficient appliances that you can invest in. These appliances use less energy without degrading performance.

You shouldn’t go out and buy it right now, but it’s something to keep in mind when it’s time to replace your old appliances.

Bonus: Finding ways to save energy isn’t just good for your wallet. It’s good for the earth too!

10. Save money with movies

I have to confess that as a teenager I started saving money with movies. These delicious treats have 800% markup! A drink and candy box would probably cost over $10.

I had a larger wallet than usual so I chose to bring a can of diet cola and a bag of candy from the Dollar Store. Skip popcorn and save your hard-earned cash instead!

11. Cancel the cable

By cancelling the cable, I saved over $1,000 a year. Cable invoices are a huge and unnecessary cost. There are cable alternatives that can be used to reduce entertainment invoices and save cash.

12. Cut the air conditioner

By turning the thermostat back 7-10 degrees, you can save 10% per year on your electricity bill.

Of course, you can save more by completely shutting off your air conditioner on an unbearable, not too hot day. Open the window, turn on the fans and make this one of the weird ways to save money.

13. Stop using paper towels

It’s green and you can save a little cash by throwing away your paper towels. Instead of throwing away your money in a paper towel, use reusable sponge or cloth.

If you still can’t cut them out completely, then at least choose a cheaper brand.

14. Grab the seasonings

Instead of throwing these extra seasonings from your Togo order, start storing them so you don’t have to buy them often. You can also grab some extras when you eat to eat. Saving seasonings is one of the easiest and most interesting ways to save money.

15. Save gas

A purposeful life can reduce frivolous spending. If possible, you can save gas by running all your errands on the same day. The less you drive, the more money you will get into your piggy bank instead of a gas tank.

16. Reuse of plastic bags

Reuse your plastic bags to save cash and planets. You wouldn’t believe all the fun ways you can reuse plastic bags!

Used for crafts and storage. You can also replace expensive garbage bags with old plastic bags.

17. Parking Scope for Slow Change

My dad picked up a penny while walking through the parking lot. I thought it was hilarious and he would say every penny leads to dollars. Well, there’s definitely the truth behind this theory, but it might sound like one crazy way to save money.

All of the loose changes are more money than before. Place a pig bank in your car and take the parking lot for a loose change whenever you go out.

18. Dumpstar Dive

Dumpstar diving is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and weird ways to save money.

But I had a friend who dug dumpsters at retailers like TJ Max and found brand new items in the trash can! She collected these items and sold them to pawn shops and online to make money. It’s insane what people throw away.

19. Reuse leftovers

Americans waste 120 billion pounds of food each year. Reuse leftovers or use a monthly meal planner to prevent waste and save on grocery bills. Have dinner last night and recreate it with rice, beans, or other budget-friendly items, and you can save money and create a delicious meal.

20. Clean it with vinegar

Cleaning supplies can be expensive. Buy white vinegar to clean your equipment, bathroom and other household items.

Can also be used for personal care! The best part is that it is non-toxic and cleans surprisingly well!

twenty one. Your cat’s litter box

As a first-time cat owner, I don’t know if this is the best idea, but some have decided to opt out of buying expensive kitten trash by learning how to potty train their cats instead.

It’s one of the more unusual, interesting ways to save money, but it might be worth trying!

twenty two. Paint the roof

According to the Horn Brothers’ roof, painting the roof with white does not absorb heat, but rather reflects heat, lowering energy costs. They also argue that brightly colored roofs can bring sunlight back to the atmosphere and reduce global warming.

twenty three. Freeze your credit card

Are you struggling with impulsive spending? If so, freezing your credit card is one of the odd ways to save money that may actually work for you. We’re not talking about putting freezes online on them, we’re literally freezing in water.

Some people put their credit cards in plastic bags, fill them with water, and put them in the freezer. This will make them less accessible and help you with a way to stop spending your money.

twenty four. I live in a small house

Anyway, how many rooms do you really need? Small homes have become mainstream – and for good reason.

Downsizing your home means you will reduce utility, mortgage payment payments and make less of less. Some people own their homes freely and clearly. This is true financial security.

twenty five. Meatless Monday

There are many delicious recipes without meat. Save cash by not eating meat one day a week and choosing the cheapest meals with beans and legumes.

These foods are not only great meat alternatives, but also contain a lot of protein and fiber. Plus, we can all use a few more vegetables in our diet, right?

26. Stop wasting water

Leaky faucets and malfunctioning toilets are not the only way we can waste water. Think about how much water will go down the drain while waiting for it to heat up for the shower or washing dishes in the sink. One of our interesting ways to save money is to take advantage of that wasteful water!

For example, place some pitchers and buckets in the bathroom to catch cold water while waiting for the shower to warm up. Then reuse the water to clean your home or water the plants.

27. Reuse the bottle

Glass jars can be reused for many purposes. You can clean them, drink glasses, store items, or use them for craft projects. Like a toilet paper roll, you can sell empty jars on eBay for money.

28. Food Sample Snacks

My step-sister does this with her brother. Instead of eating out for lunch, they head to Costco and chat about food samples. It’s one of her family’s favorite crazy ways.

29. Get a roommate

Moving yourself will help you turn you upside down financially. Luckily, splitting your rent with your roommate can free up a considerable amount of money. Perhaps they will also split the bills for electricity, water, cables, and more.

30. Find the free one

Riggle your home for free by searching Craigslist and your neighborhood. People always hand out furniture. All you have to do is get it.

Sometimes you can find a neighbor’s trash can with free signs (it’s definitely one of the weird ways to save money, but it’s worth it!). You may also be able to find clothes, books and other items.

31. Warm half of your home

My partner and I did this a lot when we were working full time. We weren’t at home for the day so we cut off the heat in most rooms and closed the doors to save on electricity bills. It may sound like one crazy way to save money, but it works!

32. I’ll eat ramen noodles for lunch

Well, that’s not one of the healthiest things, but it’s an inexpensive lunch idea. A 24-pack ramen noodles cost less than $10. With this purchase, you can eat lunch every day for almost a month!

33. Salvation Army Discount Days

When I was little, my mother and I went to the Salvation Army a day. All clothing was only $1 per item! To save on clothes and more, check with your local Salvation Army for discount dates.

34. Try out the tasks without issues

Want to be a super saver? One of the best and weird ways to save money is to try a no-expenditure challenge. This is when you don’t spend money on anything other than invoices and essentials.

Start with a difficult week and continue your path up to a month. Then, if you feel truly ambitious, you can try it all year round!

35. I walk my work or my bike

Work and riding a bike are super simple ways to start living a healthy lifestyle and save money. Even going one-way or bike can save you gas money.

Are you worried about getting caught in the rain? If the weather is bad, you can walk there and ride with a colleague’s house.

36. Cut off the alcohol

Even if you drink a few cocktails or glass of wine a week, those prices may still be added up. After all, $18 or $20 cocktails are becoming the norm. That’s before adding taxes or tips!

Imagine it. Usually, if you’re dealing with two post-work cocktails a week, it’s up to $160 per month. Simply throwing away alcoholic beverages is an easy (and healthy) way to save money.

37. Hide your wallet

If you like the idea of freeze your credit card and are a little wary of making extra hacks like this, try this. Instead, hide your wallet.

When you get home at the end of the day, push your wallet into an annoying place, such as under the sofa or above the fridge. If you have a wallet that doesn’t reach your arms, you’re less likely to succumb to your impulse to shop online.

38. Take a cold shower

Well, you may not want to do this to death in the winter, but it should be a fair game on most days of the year.

Another of our favorite strange ways to save money is to take a cold shower. You consume less warm water and lower your monthly bill.

Plus, many health experts even like to promote the benefits of cold showers, so it’s worth trying!

39. Pay your bills on time

Hopefully you’re already paying your bill on time. However, if you tend to procrastinate when it’s time to pay your internet or phone bill, it’s even more motivated. Paying your bills on time can help you save cash.

how? By avoiding large late fees.

Certainly, these $20 fines may not feel much. However, if you pay your bills late and frequently, this cost in the long run costs hundreds of dollars.

Pro Tip: Make sure you never fall behind invoices again by linking your invoice to your bank account in your car.

40. We will give you a homemade birthday present

Naturally, you want to ruin your loved one on their birthday. However, if you are in a small space and are trying to save cash, these events can add excessive stress to your life.

Instead, consider giving your loved one a homemade gift for their birthday. Often, these love-made, straight gifts make far more meaningful than what you find in the store anyway.

For example, your grandma will probably want to spend 30 minutes on the phone with you or receive a handwritten letter in the mail. And it only costs a few cents!

You can also surprise your friends with a memorial journal detailing all of your favorite hangouts and weird moments from the past year. After all, who doesn’t love Walkdown Memory Lane?

Expert Tip: Throw away plastic and pay in cash

In today’s age, it can seem like it’s one of the really weird ways to actually save money. It’s to pay in cash.
Seriously, Forbes’ survey reveals that only 9% of Americans pay primarily in cash. However, credit, debit cards and contactless payments make it easy to load your shopping cart with bad junk, whether it’s necessary or bad to shop impulsively on Amazon.

If you want to challenge yourself to save cash, you just have to pay cash for a month (except for rent, internet, electricity, etc.). You’ll be surprised at how little you buy!

What is the best way to dramatically save money?

One of the best ways to dramatically save money is to take on the challenge of saving money. For example, you can commit without the challenge of January, where you buy nothing but the essentials of the month. This assignment can be done in any month of the year.

If you’re a big coffee drinker, doing the Coffee Break Challenge can also dramatically save more money in a year.

How can I save $10,000 easily?

The easiest way to save $10,000 easily is to break it down every month. In other words, to save $10,000 a year, you need to save $833 a month.

Next, look at your lifestyle and decide what you can cut from your monthly expenses, including eating out, take-out coffee, unnecessary subscriptions, nail polish, and more.

Finally, look for ways to increase your income by starting a side hustle, seeking a raise or trying to find a new job to help you reach your savings goals.

Are there any strange ways to save money?

You can also save money in more traditional ways. For example, you can eat at home, make your own coffee, sell old clothes, or use coupons when you buy.
